How often should I change the oil in my standby generator?

A standby generator’s oil should be changed on the schedule listed in your specific manufacturer’s manual. Intervals differ by run hours, load, fuel type, climate, and whether the unit is in its initial break-in period.

We service Generac and KOHLER systems in the Mont Ida area, and our techs often see lightly used units still need an oil and filter change after a single long outage because accumulated run time adds up fast.

Change oil sooner if you notice any of the following:

 • The generator ran for many hours during a recent outage or at high load
 • The oil on the dipstick looks dark, gritty, or smells like fuel
 • A maintenance reminder or warning light appears on the controller
 • The unit operated in very dusty or sooty conditions

When in doubt, stop running the generator and schedule a maintenance check to prevent engine damage.
Updated: 2026-05-06
Need help in Mont Ida, KS? Call (816) 919-1800 or book online.
